I’m sure you all are noticing how expensive everything is getting. So the paychecks may have the same numbers on them, but they just don’t go as far as they used to. Food prices alone rose 3.9% in February. This was the biggest increase in wholesale food prices in 36 years! For more info on monetary issues visit http://www.silvercoincommerce.com.
So you probably know where this article is heading. And I hope I can keep your attention for just a bit longer. The trick, with the concepts I’m going to explain is to understand that the principle of “giving yourself a raise by using less” is not necessarily going to lower your quality of living.
I thought it would be fun to make the point by comparing two [make believe] characters. Obtuse Orlene with Contemplative Clarissa.
Obtuse Orlene is neighbors with Contemplative Clarissa. They live next door, in fact. They both have 2.8 kids, a dog, a cat, a husband, and have very similar tastes and hobbies. Where they differ, is in how they use resources like money, food, gas, etc.
Obtuse Orlene drives to the store 10 times a week.
Contemplative Clarissa drives to the store 1 time a week.
When Orlene is asked why so many trips. She simply states that the store is not too far away and it shouldn’t be a big deal if she wants to run to the store to pick up a few things here and there.
Contemplative Clarissa sits down and makes a complete grocery and supply list for the week so she only needs to shop once. Clarissa realize that “little trips” add up in the long run. The store is only a 6 mile round trip but Clarissa likes to see how long she can go between fuel ups on the car. She also realizes that her time is more valuable than being a grocery delivery driver.
The difference? Obtuse Orlene uses (in her 20 MPG car) 6miles times 9 trips times 52 weeks = 2808 miles or ($3.50 per gallon gas), $140.00 more per year plus wear and tear on the car might add another $150 or so equalling around $300 dollars per year. (If you want to get real picky about how much it costs to drive your car Click here The bigger cost of these extra trips was realized by Contemplative Clarissa. Each trip to the grocery store takes Obtuse Orlene an hour -minimum-. Including the stress of keeping track of her kids in the store. That’s 9 trips x 52 weeks = 468 HOURS! Contemplative Clarissa simply has better things to do with her time.
Obtuse Orlene and Contemplative Clarissa have another neighbor named Treehugging Trixi. Trixi shops once every two weeks because she has converted her entire front yard into a beautiful vegetable garden and networks with other gardeners on www.NeighborFresh.com™. Trixi is always a pleasant companion to have on shopping trips and graciously shares her fresh, home-grown, organic vegetables with her carpooling friends.
